What is the appropriate amount of clothing to put in a top load washer and dryer?
Load the washer so that your clothing fits loosely
in the washer tub. Overfilling the washer will lessen its ability
to properly wash your clothes.

Is wash temperature really important?
Yes, it affects the performance of the laundry products
used, the behavior of soil, the wrinkling of fabrics, and the durability
of colors and fabric finishes. Basic laundry soils are made up of
human skin soils. These soils melt at roughly body temperature.
They will be difficult to remove in water that is cooler than body
temperature. Sometimes hot water is needed to clean heavy soils
adequately; sometimes cool water is needed to preserve color or
finish. When using cool water temperatures, additional pretreating
or presoaking may be necessary. Wash temperature is also important
because the heating of water for laundering requires energy. With
the increasing cost of energy, consumers are looking for ways to
conserve its use. It is, therefore, important to understand the
role of wash water temperature and to have a clear understanding
of the temperatures needed for various tasks in order to use heated
water wisely.

What about rinse temperature?
It is practical and desirable for everyone to
use cold water for rinsing all loads of clothes. This will provide
effective rinsing and substantially reduce (by up to 1/3) the energy
used to heat water. Also, cold water rinsing minimizes wrinkling
of permanent press items.

When would you recommend that hot water be used?
The performance of all detergents will be diminished
at lower temperatures. Some items really need a hot water wash to
get the dirt out most effectively and to prolong their useful life.
